To achieve this qualification candidates must successfully complete 4 units to include:
- 3 mandatory units
- 1 mandatory unit from their chosen pathway
Additional units are available for all pathways, but are not required to achieve the qualification.

This qualification has been developed to seek to ensure that those that wish to seek employment as an operative within traffic management meet minimum requirements of technical competence and health and safety. These requirements have been specified in the National Occupational Standards (NOS) developed by the Sector Skills Council (SSC) Construction Skills in liaison with employers and industry/ sector representatives. This qualification is based upon those NOS and incorporates the Qualification Structure approved by SQA Accreditation. Successful completion of this qualification will allow candidates to show they have sufficient knowledge, understanding and skills to demonstrate competence as a traffic management operative in relation to their chosen pathway.
Candidates may complete a number of pathways from this qualification with regards to different methods of traffic management and roads types:
- Static temporary traffic management on high speed roads
- Mobile temporary traffic management on motorways and dual carriageways
- Temporary traffic management on urban and rural roads
